I was hanging my moist clothes, fresh from being washed on my beautiful yard. It’s been awhile since Wangero had visited from school. That made me feel older, but somehow it was pleasing that my girl was all grown up and taking life by the horns. She might not come back after the fiasco that happened the last time she came to visit. Maggie still holds a grudge for that. Her beautiful quilt that was going to be hers was ruined by her sister. It was pretty amazing how long that girl can hold a drug.
“ Mom I’m going out, be back soon.”
I turned back towards Maggie but she had already dashed off. “So independent,” I thought. after hanging the last of the clothes, I took a chair and decided to rest. the hot sun was giving it’s comfortable warmth, healing my old aching body. As soon as I closed my eyes i fell asleep.
I opened my eyes and the sun was setting. “ Oh lord,” i said “ I better get supper started.” I got up in a energetic way like that nap gave me all the strength i needed. i opened the sliding door which i thought we didn’t have and went inside the kitchen.
I was amazed by how the kitchen looked. the counter was made with egg white tiles, a big a fat window with laced white curtains, was placed above the faucet, and brand new stainless steel pots and pans Glistened in the kitchen. “Oh, jesus christ, take the wheel, I’m gonna have a heart attack!” I said to myself, as i took a few steps back, i thought i was dreaming! I looked left and right, there were two large white halls. With lacquered birch wood floors. I was going to pass out, until I saw Wangero with the velvet sweater and jewelry on her face. I looked at her in a dazed expression. I called out, “ Dee! You're back!”.
She replied, “ I know I just moved in ,but you don’t have to tell all the maids.”
I gasped, ”we have maids.”
“Of course we do, how would all your grandchildren be taken cared of?”
