Prompt A: How does Ying Ying's story reflect her life and her daughter's life?
Ying-Ying's story, The Moon Lady, represents a time in her life when she had one wish and she couldn't tell anyone except one person, the Moon Lady. That's how she lives her life. It says in the beginning of the story, "For all these years I kept my mouth closed so selfish desires would not fall out." And because Ying-Ying lives like this, her daughter doesn't see or pay attention to her.
The shadow in the story is also a big part of Ying-Ying's life. In the story, it says, "All these years I kept my true nature hidden, running along like a small shadow so nobody could catch me." Her shadow represents her life, nobody can truly understand her, and nobody really knows her and who she really is.
Both the shadow and keeping her mouth closed are two important and similar aspects of her life. The shadow represents people not knowing who she is and what type of person she is, and keeping her mouth closed represents people not knowing what she truly wants or desires.
